I participated FEMeeting in Portugal with my project. There were 66 women presenting amazing projects. It was a huge honour to present my work with yeast images to this group.
The conference aimed to:
“Meeting is to bring together women from all over the world to share and disseminate their projects in the arts, science and technology research.”
The participation with my project opened my eyes a lot. Specially how to communicate the important issues that I would like to emphasize with my art. There are still lot of work to do with the bigger themes and how to communicate these with the yeast images. Themes like ecological issues are difficult to highlight within the 10 minute presentation. I did practice the presentation but still the pace was too slow and had to cut the final important couple of sentences.
In the future I would like to be able to share knowledge regarding the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and sustainable use of biodiversity. These are more important than how the images are made.
I was totally not in my comfort zone with the presentation and small talk. But also I think this is something that I know I have to work on more. The elevator speech would be useful but also these events are about so much more. The promotion of your own project happens in different places than in the between the other talks. Three days full of presentations was bit overwhelming.
It is important to go far to see it close. This brake from the actual project work was really good. Now I know better where to focus. The trip was quite expensive but worth the money.
